Safety Around Swimming Pools

Safety swimming pool fencing and adult supervision are very important in keeping children safe around water.

Safety Glass Pool Fencing

If you have a swimming pool, it needs to be protected by a pool fence to prevent children from entering the pool area unsupervised.  The main reason for it is to protect children’s lives. Pool fencing reduces the risk of drowning to about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool. Adult supervision, however, is essential for children’s safety around water.

Pool fencing needs to be at least 1200mm in height and have a self-closing gate, opening away from the pool. It is the owner’s responsibility to maintain the fence and the gate and make sure there are no objects near the fence that kids can climb on and over the fence. Many glass pool fencing Perth companies provide extensive guidelines of what is required. Australian Building Commission also provides a good overview – see Swimming pools and spas.

It makes sense to shop around for a good price for your pool fence. There are dozens of fencing contractors all around the place and many charge rather different amounts for exactly the same type of fence. When shopping for a quote, ask about the type of materials being used, where they come from, who will be installing the fence and if there is any warranty.

Glass pool fencing is becoming more and more popular option as a safety barrier as it provides clear view and is more durable than your conventional steel fence. There are three types of glass pool fencing available – fully frameless, semi-frameless and framed. All of them must use safety toughened glass – it’s only different the way the glass panels are fixed to the ground. There are many DIY kits available on the market, but when working with glass it is important for the job to be done correctly, to make sure that the glass fence can withstand the force of gale wind and children’s “rough” play.

It it important to remember that having a pool fence will never replace adult supervision. Ultimately it is the responsibility of parents, guardians or older siblings to make sure that little children are supervised around water at all times.
